Learn about audio tracks

With the JW Platform, you can add and manage multiple audio tracks for your hosted media. Audio tracks are automatically extracted during upload or live-to-VOD conversion, preserving key metadata and simplifying post-ingest workflows. After upload or conversion, you can add additional tracks to the media item.

JWP’s audio track features enable you to do the following:

Support multiple audio tracks for diverse audience needs
Reduce manual input by auto-populating track metadata
Enable direct management of audio tracks and metadata through the dashboard or API

Features

Feature	Description
Track Extraction	All audio tracks are extracted from the media file during upload.
Metadata Retrieval and Editing	Extracted audio tracks include their language code. Track metadata can be updated through the dashboard or API. NOTE: If the language code is not present in the source file, the platform defaults to `en` (English).
Additional Track Management	Additional audio tracks can be associated with VOD media after ingest, allowing you to add descriptive audio or music not included in the original file.
Audio File Support	The JW Platform supports any file format that is compatible with multiple audio tracks, including the following: .3gp .avi .mkv .mov .mpg .mp4 .ogv .webm .wmv

Audio track types

The JW Platform manages the audio tracks associated with your media.

By default, all audio tracks in the original file appear in the player's audio options. To hide a track, you must delete it.

Type	Description
Default audio track	(Original file) Primary audio track of the media JWP stores the first audio stream indexed in the media container as the default audio track. This track plays when viewers watch the video on your site. There is one default audio track per media item.
Auto-extracted alternate audio tracks	(Original file) Other audio tracks extracted the media
Manually uploaded alternate audio tracks	Audio tracks that are uploaded after the media item has been created All manually uploaded tracks are stored as alternate audio tracks.
