Trim a video or create a clip

Using the JWX dashboard, you can trim video on demand (VOD) content or create a new clip from either a direct VOD upload or a live stream that has been converted to VOD.

Keep the following in mind when trimming VOD media or creating a new clip:

• You cannot trim or clip DRM-encrypted media. If needed, you can disable DRM for a media item to allow for changes.
• New clips can be created from CMAF VOD media. Trimming is not available for CMAF VOD.
• The Trim & create clip editor can only preview media whose original upload format is supported by web browsers. If the original source file uses a format, codec, or container that browsers cannot play, the video cannot be rendered for trimming or clipping.

Create a video clip

Follow these video and steps to create a clip:

1. From your Media library, click the name of a video. The media details page appears.
2. Click the (Trim & create clips icon) in the video preview section. The Trim & create clip popup window appears.
3. Drag the blue sections to the desired start and end point.
4. Click Save as new clip. A new panel appears.
5. Enter a Clip title to Name your video clip.
6. (Optional) Click Navigate to new clip to open the new clip after it has been created.
7. (Optional) Click Copy tags and custom parameters to the new clip.
8. Click Create.

Creating a video clip creates a new media item with a unique media ID.

Unclip a video

Follow these steps to unclip a video:

1. From your Media library, click the name of a video. The media details page appears.
2. Click the (Trim & Create Clips) icon in the video preview section. The Trim & create clip popup window appears.
3. Drag the blue sections to the start and end of the video.
4. Click Trim.

If you have developer resources, you can trim a video using the API.

NOTE: When using the API, you can only trim VOD media. Additionally, you cannot create a clip as a new media item.

2. Click the (scissors icon) in the video preview section. The Trim & create clip popup window appears.
3. Resize the blue sections to the desired start and end times.
4. Click Trim.

FAQ

Can I clip or trim any media item that was previously DRM-encrypted but now has DRM disabled?

Although disabling DRM for the media item allows you to clip and trim it, if the media item was uploaded before 29 September 2025, the dashboard may require you to reupload the video.

Although an original file can be retrimmed in the future, JWX does not store an original file in its exact form. Be sure to retain your original files locally.
