Trim a video or create a clip

Using the JWX dashboard, you can trim video on demand (VOD) content or create a new clip from either a direct VOD upload or a live stream that has been converted to VOD. CMAF VOD clips begin and end on the exact frames you select, while Traditional VOD clips and trims begin and end at segment boundaries.

Keep the following in mind when trimming VOD media or creating a new clip:

• You cannot trim or clip DRM-encrypted media. If needed, you can disable DRM for a media item to allow for changes.
• New clips can be created from CMAF VOD media. Trimming is not available for CMAF VOD.
• The clipping and trimming editor can only preview media whose original upload format is supported by web browsers. If the original source file uses a format, codec, or container that browsers cannot play, the video cannot be rendered for clipping or trimming.

Create a video clip

Follow these steps to create a clip:

1. From your Media library, click the name of a video. The media details page appears.

2. Above the preview player, click Open clip and trim tool. The clipping interface appears.

3. (Optional) Beneath the preview window, adjust the timeline Fit until it clearly displays the portion of the stream you want to clip. You can do this in two ways:

   • Preselected: From the Fit dropdown menu, choose a preselected fit option based on the stream’s duration.
   • Manual: Beside the Fit dropdown menu, click (maximize icon) to zoom in on the stream or (minimize icon) to zoom out.

4. Define the clip through one of the following approaches:

   Click and drag

   
   

   1. On the timeline, click at the point where the clip should start, or use the time input to key in the exact timecode. A marker appears.
   2. Drag from the marker to the point where the clip should end. As you begin dragging, a blue rectangle appears outlining the boundary of the video clip.
   3. Click and drag either end of the rectangle to adjust the clip duration.

   Define Set in and Set out points

   
   

   1. On the timeline, click at the point where the clip should start, or use the time input to key in the exact timecode. A marker appears.
   
   
   2. Click Set in (or the letter I on your keyboard) to set the current marker location as the start of the clip. A blue rectangle appears.
   
   
   3. Click at the point where the clip should end, or use the time input to key in the exact timecode. A marker appears.
   
   
   4. Click Set out (or the letter O on your keyboard) to set the current marker location at the end of the clip. The right side of the blue rectangle extends to the end location. The blue rectangle shows the boundary of the video clip.

5. In the preview window, click the play icon to preview the clip.

6. Click Save as new. The Save as new media panel appears.

7. Enter the Title of the new media clip.

8. (Optional) Click Copy tags and custom parameters to the new clip to ensure metadata from the original VOD stream is inherited by the new clip.

9. Click Save as new. Once the clip is processed, the new clip will appear in your media library.

Unclip a video

Follow these steps to unclip a video:

1. From your Media library, click the name of a video clip. The media details page appears.
2. Adjsut the clip length (steps 2-5).
3. Click Save media > Save.

Trim a video

Follow these steps to trim a video:

1. In the Media library, click the name of a video clip. The media details page appears.

5. In the preview window, click the play icon to preview the clip.

6. Click Save media. The Save media panel appears.

   Saving the changes will trim and overwrite the media version.

   Trimming will also generate an additional version of caption tracks if they are present in the original file.

7. Click Save.

Follow these steps to untrim a video:

1. In the Media library, click the name of the video.
2. Adjust the trim length (steps 2-5).
3. Click Save media > Save.

FAQ

Can I clip or trim any media item that was previously DRM-encrypted but now has DRM disabled?

Although disabling DRM for the media item allows you to clip and trim it, if the media item was uploaded before 29 September 2025, the dashboard may require you to reupload the video.

Does JWX store my original file after I trim or create a clip?

Although an original file can be retrimmed in the future, JWX does not store an original file in its exact form. Be sure to retain your original files locally.
